When I received the booking details for Friday evening's event, I thought I understood what I was walking into. Another corporate award ceremony. Another night of photographing handshakes and trophy presentations. I could not have been more wrong.

The Moment Everything Changed.

Walking into the Mines Rescue Services Awards Ceremony hosted by the Impala Platinum Group, I noticed immediately that something was different. Couples arrived dressed in their finest, pride radiating from every pair. But it wasn't until the Mines Rescue Services Anthem, sung by Daniel Baron, filled the room that the full weight of the evening hit me.

"Into the fire we will go. We are asked to take it in the dark. We will be the light carried through the night."

As these words echoed through the venue, I found myself getting emotional. The lyrics weren't just poetry; they were a lived reality for every person in that room.

“There is no glory we claim; we do whatever it takes.”

Suddenly, I understood. This was not about heroes seeking recognition. This was about people who run toward danger when others run away, who have stood the test of time as guardians in the depths where danger lies.

Moving through the crowd with my camera, I watched the faces of the MRS brigadesmen, men who literally march into the mines, who face disaster and bring life from the ashes. I saw their wives holding their hands, surrounded by an atmosphere of profound pride for work that so often goes unnoticed by the world above ground. These women know intimately what those words mean: “silent prayers for the ones who have gone before. With every breath, we will break the better key.”

When the CEO Got it Right

There was a moment that will stay with me forever. The Impala CEO paused the proceedings to ask the men to applaud the women standing beside them. What followed was breathtaking. The expression on each man's face shifted to one of deep admiration and genuine gratitude.

It's undeniable that many photos I’ve seen fail to capture my interest. Often, images display uneven homes, skewed walls, or counters and tables that look off-balance. Photos taken from above can exacerbate this issue. There’s a noticeable lack of symmetry and pride in the visuals showcased on these platforms.

As a photographer, I frequently ask myself why people take random photos of items that hold no appeal for potential buyers. For instance, photographing a bathroom and toilet separately, or capturing a random garden statue without proper framing, fails to convey the true essence of the space.

2. Depth of Field

Many homes featured on these platforms lack a sense of depth. Often, agents take photos from above without aiming to showcase the room’s beauty. To truly highlight a space, it’s important to capture its full depth and dimension.

3. Flash

Cellphone flash can often result in dark, uneven lighting conditions that fail to showcase all the elements of a room. Poor lighting can diminish the overall appeal of your photos.

Some are scamming clients, disappearing, or simply not delivering the final product.Bride and wedding Facebook groups are increasingly flooded with questions about which photographers to hire, often accompanied by thousands of comments and recommendations. The sad reality is that the field of photography has become so saturated that full-time photographers now have to work harder to prove their authenticity. Brides and vendors are increasingly questioning new full-time photographers, adding more strain to an already challenging career.

How to Avoid Getting Scammed - Tips and Insights

1. Do Your Homework:

Researching a photographer is stressful. I’ve been there, planning a wedding myself. You think about all the images, how they’ll look, if you'll get what you want, if the photographer will show up, etc. 1.1. Start with a Google search. A full-time photographer running a business will be easily searchable in your area. View each profile first!

Grab a piece of paper and write down every photography company/brand you're interested in.

2. View their website!

This is crucial. Go through every page, check out their profiles and work, learn who they are, what they do, and read the reviews.

3. Visit their Facebook and Instagram pages—but don’t interact yet!

Note down what you like about their profile and style.TIP: Look for emails like "photographer@udream.co.za" and links to websites. Does the company showcase the photographer's face as well? If not, make a note.

4. Reach out via email and request their packages.

You should receive a photography profile that includes company information like CIPC number, VAT number (if registered), address, email, website, and detailed information on their workflow and packages

Make a Shortlist:After requesting information, review your list and note the pros and cons. Consider pricing, professionalism, layout, style, etc.Ask yourself the following questions:

Do they have a Google business page, valid website, business/personalized Facebook and Instagram?
Where are they located?
What didn’t you like when viewing their profile?
Are they a full-time or part-time photographer?
What is their email address?
Can in-person meetings be scheduled?
Will you receive a photography contract?
What are the lead times for their work?
What are the deposit requirements?
Arrange a meeting, either in person or via Teams, and ask your questions during the consultation.

Tip: If uncertain, book a mini shoot to see their process and the validity of their work.

5. Don’t Ask for Recommendations on Bride Groups Without Doing Your Homework First!

This is a prime way to fall prey to photography scammers. While I do reply occasionally, brides who have done their homework and know what they want won’t need to be flooded with recommendations and can stay focused on their goal.Instead, read through other brides' requests and adjust your list accordingly. You don’t need to rush this—take your time!

6.Booking and Contracts:

Once you’ve chosen a vendor, ensure you get a well-written contract from the photographer. It should include their full business details, payment terms, and their own terms and conditions.Make sure you get the signed contract from the photographer with an ID number (if not a registered entity) or business number before paying a deposit.

Important: If a photographer won’t send you a contract first, find another photographer because this one is not serious about business etiquette.
